Another ten minutes went by when
finally the door open and A.J., Rick and Cecilia walked in. They saw Jon
holding her hand as she lay their sleeping. “Jon?” A.J. asked. He looked up and
answered “Yes” “We need to go downtown to the police station and give our
statement. Town’s waiting for us. Do you want us to call anybody for you?” A.J.
asked.
Jon replied “I really should call Doc
and the guys. Give them an update. I’ll call from the station.”
“Ok then let’s get going. Mom’s
staying here with her so she’ll call if there’s any change Ok?” Jon shook his
head yes and then got up but not before kissing her again before he left.
The ride to the police station was
quite. Rick and A.J. didn’t know what to really say as they realized their
mother was right about Jon and Mary. They seemed to have become very close in
the short time they knew each other. But they wondered if it was more the
situation that they were in than actually falling for each naturally. If so
then that could be a problem down the road when they realize maybe they’re
feelings weren’t real. They really didn’t want their sister hurt. When they
arrived they were ushered into Town’s office. Town went over everything with
them from where Dave Potter was hired to the attack on Mary. Unfortunately Jon
didn’t know much about the hiring process since he didn’t do it so Town had
Nixon call in McGhee to fill in those blanks.
“Lt. Brown I’d like to be here when
Doc explains about the hiring process if that would Ok?” Jon asked.
“I don’t see why not. We can talk to
him in one of our interrogation rooms so you can watch without him knowing.”
Town replied.
“Why can’t I be there with him?” Jon
asked.
“Because he may not be all that
truthful with you there. They’re could be things he doesn’t want you to know.
This way we can at least get some what of the truth out of him. Does he run all
of your handlings?” Town asked Jon.
“Yeah. Most of it. I’m too busy with touring,
writing, and interviews. I guess I should be more aware but that’s why you hire
people YOU thought you could trust.” He replied somewhat sheepishly.
“Sometimes that can be someone’s
undoing. Then they take advantage of you when they think you’re not looking.
But it also could be that the background check was falsified because Potter
just wanted to get on your crew.” Town said.
“Well let’s hope for the latter because
I would really hate to think Doc did this on purpose.” Jon said hopefully.
It was about another thirty-five
minutes before McGhee had arrived at the station. He was escorted right into
the interrogation room where Town and Nixon we’re going to question him. He
asked where Jon was and they explained that he was in Town’s office waiting for
him to be finished. Rick, A.J. and Jon where actually watching the interview.
Doc had answered all of Town’s questions and
explained how the hiring process was done and that the background checks on
Potter only showed a few misdemeanors. Nothing life threatening or imprisonment.
Just things that happened when he was a juvenile. His answers seemed to appease
Town.
Rick turned to Jon “Well did his
answers send up any red flags for you?”
“Yeah. But I need to double check
everything he’s doing.” Jon said a little gruffly.
“Why’s that? Rick asked.
“Because I know Doc better than I
know myself. He’s hiding something. I can see it in his eyes.” Jon said.
“Jon, you need to elaborate.” A.J.
said now getting annoyed.
“I can’t, I just can’t explain it.
I’m all for giving someone a second chance. But I don’t understand why he
didn’t tell me about Dave’s past. I should have been informed. ‘getting
irritated himself now’ I mean it’s my DAMN BAND!” Right then Town had entered
the room and the guys explained Jon’s misgivings and uneasiness about the
interview. He nodded and said he would go back and ask a few more questions.
Town reentered the interrogation room
and nodded to Nixon to leave. “Ok Mr. McGhee. Let’s get some things straight.
Going over you’re statement, why didn’t you tell Mr. Bon Jovi about Potter’s
back ground?”
Doc looked at him and replied a
little bit upset now, “Because Jon has enough on his plate as it is. And he
doesn’t need to get into this part of MY Management!” He looked at Town and
continued, “Plus Potter is a friend of a friend’s brother and I owed him a
favor. Does Jonny need to know this?”
“I don’t know. Why don’t you ask him
yourself?” Town said just as Jon came bursting into the room.
“YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!” Jon
screamed and grabbed Doc by his collar. The brothers just followed by letting Jon
do his thing seeing that McGhee lied to them as he had to Jon. And had put Mary
in such terrible danger.
“JON! Let me try and explain.
Please.” Doc begged him.
“You not almost got me and the guys
KILLED! But Mary could have!” Then Jon took a swing at him and hit him square
in the nose. Rick, A.J. and Town swooped in to break them up, but not before
Jon hit him again on his chin sending him into the table.
“All right tiger. That’s enough.” Rick
said, grabbing Jon behind his arms so they were over his head. Jon tried to get
out of the hold but Rick had a tight hold on him. “I said that’s enough.” Rick
yelled and threw Jon onto a chair.
Doc looked at Jon “Jon I didn’t know
he was a psychopath! I just owed this guy a favor and he asked that his nephew
could get a job with our organization. That’s all!”
“Yeah well that’s just great Doc.
Because it also most cost a few lives in the process, you dumb FUCK!” Jon was
just beside himself now. “We’re so going to talk later about EVERYTHING! You
got it!”
“Yeah sure. No problem. Whatever you
say Jon.” Doc agreed but at this point he would have agreed to anything Jon
asked of him.
“No! You’re not going to pacify me
like that. Either you come clean with me or you’re out. You got that?!” Jon
said matter of factly. Doc just shook his head knowing that he had no choice in
the matter. He didn’t want to lose his meal ticket. Then Jon looked at Town and
asked if he could make a phone call.
“Yeah sure. I’ll have Nixon bring you
back to my office.”
“Thanks.” Jon said. Once in Towns
office Jon called the guys and was talking to Richie and was explaining what
happened with Doc.
“Man I can’t believe Doc did that
man.” Richie said.
“Yeah I know. But I can’t deal with
him right now Rich. I need to get back at the hospital.” Jon stated.
“Man you do have it bad for her. How
is she?” Richie asked.
“She’s pretty banged up. They have
her on an IV giving her blood and saline. She’s on oxygen and hooked up to
monitors. That bastard really did a job on her. And if I ever get my hands on
him again he’s dead!”
“Yeah we all feel like that. But Jon
you didn’t see his office. He had a thing for you man. We’re lucky he didn’t
kill you or her.” Richie stated. “Are you headed back to the hospital now?” He
asked Jon.
“Yeah. As soon as they say I can
leave I’m outta here.”
“Ok then I’ll let you go. Keep me
informed. Ok Kidd?”
“Yeah sure. Talk to you later.” And Jon hung
up walking back to in interrogation room.
As he went in he asked Rick and A.J.
if it was alright to head back to the hospital. A.J. replied “I don’t see why
not. It’s eight forty-five a.m. so by the time we get there it will be visiting
hours.”
“Great. Let’s go.” Jon said eagerly.
“Jon but we have interviews today, and then we
have to get ready to pack up and leave in two days.” Doc started saying but Jon
cut him off.
“Doc shut the fuck up! Just shut the
FUCK UP! Richie and Dave can do the interviews and they can pack up my stuff.
On the way to the next venue we are going to talk! But then I’ll be back here.
Got it! You don’t have a say in my personal life! Not anymore!” and with that
Jon stormed out. It was a little after nine when they got to Mary’s room and
she was trying to eat her breakfast. But failing miserably. She smiled as they
walked in.
Rick looked at her and said “Well she
must be doing better she’s eating”
“You mean this crap? I don’t think
so. Beside I not really that hungry.” She said.
“Well you have to eat something. You
need you strength.” A.J. stated.
“Now you’re sounding like Mom!”
“Well that’s not a bad thing you
know. Speaking of her, where is she?” A.J. asked.
“I finally convinced her to go home and get
some sleep because she was driving me crazy. Plus I needed some sleep. You guys
look like you could use some too.”
“We’re fine.” Rick said.
But A.J. knew where she was going
with this. “You know you’re right. We could use some sleep. Right Rick? So will
leave and let the two of you get reacquainted.” And A.J. grabbed Rick and left.
“I thought they would never leave.” Jon
said.
“Really. Why?” she asked.
“Because I couldn’t do this.” And he
walked over to her and gently took her face with both his hands and gently
kissed her on the lips. After what seemed like a life time he asked her “I hope
I didn’t hurt you.”
“Um? What.”
“Right” he chuckled and kissed her
again. “So when are you getting out of here?” he asked.
“I don’t know. They haven’t said
anything yet.” She told him still a little surprised about the kisses.
“Well I can’t wait so I can hold you again
properly.” He told her smiling. She just smiled. But then she turned her head
to look out the window. He wondered what was wrong so he had to ask her. “Yeah,
what’s wrong sweetheart.” She turned back to look at him and then looked down
at the bed.
She softly said “We still need to
talk Jon.”
“What about?” he was afraid to ask
but he had to know what was bothering her.
“Aren’t you leaving in a few days?” she asked.
“Yeah. But I’ll be back. Why?” now
his heart was in his mouth.
“Because of what happened?” she asked
again wondering if he was playing stupid or not.
“What?!” now he was really trying not to get
irritated.
“You heard you me. Are you just
sticking around because you feel guilty about what happen?” She so didn’t want
to fall for this guy. Then that night at A.J.’s something happened and she saw
the real Jon. Or until Doc came in and something in him switched.
“Are you kidding me? I thought what happened
between us the other night, before that nut job, when we made love. I thought…”
He just looked like she punched him in
the face.
Now she didn’t know what to do. She
just looked at him. Then said, “You really don’t remember what happened before
we left A.J.’s do you” She asked.
Now he looked at her confused. “I
told you I’m a little deft at times. No I don’t. Did I do something wrong that
made you mad at me. Because you seemed really pissed at me back at the
auditorium.”
God he really didn’t know. Freaking
men. How can she tell him he was acting like a jerk and that if he didn’t piss
her off that much she probably wouldn’t of ran off like that and probably would
of known that there was something wrong with Potter.
“Fine I’ll tell you but you have to
promise you won’t get mad at me.” She told him.
“Ok I’ll try.” He smirked.
“Well you shoved me back at A.J.’s
when I suggested that we cancel the concert and when I put my hand on your arm,
you threw it off and demanded if I was coming with you back to the auditorium.
That’s when Rick screamed at you for yelling at me. Anyway that’s when we went back to the
auditorium and you were treating me like a piece of meat.” She said.
“So that’s why I was getting the cold
shoulder from you. I wondered why. Ahh Babe I’m so sorry. I told you I can be
an Ass at times. And that I put you in danger. You have no idea how guilty I
felt about that. And I’m going to try and make it up to you in every possible
way I can. Starting with telling you how much I care about you.” He told her as
sincerely as he could.
“Really?” she asked him because she
did want to believe him but he was leaving in a few days and she wasn’t sure if
it was guilt that he was feeling.
“You don’t believe me?” he asked feeling a
little hurt.
“You only have a couple of days and you can’t
do much here in the hospital. Plus I’m still not sure that what you’re feeling
isn’t guilt Jon.” She told him honestly.
“Then I’ll have to wait till you get out then
won’t I.” as he said wriggling his eyes.
“You’re incorrigible!” she said with
a smile.
“Yeah, but you wouldn’t love me any
other way.” Jon said confidently.
“How do you know I love you? Maybe I
don’t?” said with a slight smile on her lips and a dip in her stomach.
“Oh really? I know because I do love
you. That’s why.” He said as he bowed to kiss her again.
Oh God. Did she love him? Did he
really love her? Now her head was starting to hurt. She was so confused she
wanted to scream. She really needed to sit him down and really, really talk to
him. Things were going way to fast she thought.
“Hey, is there something else wrong?”
Jon asked.
“You just said you Love me. Jon we’ve
only known each other for what, less than a week.”
“So? I know how I feel.” He said
annoyed. “Are you trying to tell me that you don’t feel the same way?” he asked
a little afraid but also a little angry now.
“I told you we have to talk. This is
going a little too fast for me. And I’m really confused right now.” She said.
“About What!” he asked a little too
harshly.
“Really Jon?! You’re mad at me?” she
asked now somewhat peeved herself now.
But before they could get into it Cecilia
arrived. “Well how’s my girl doing? She asked.
Mary looked at her and said with
annoyance in her voice “Just great Mar. Any news on getting me out of here?”
Cecilia noticed that there was tension in the room. She could see that the both
of them looked upset.
“Well I just came from talking to the
doctor and he said I can take you home tomorrow. They just want to observe you
for one more night due to the head injury you have.” She explained.
“That’s great! The sooner I get out
of here the better. I can’t seem to sleep.” Mary said.
“Oh Honey do you want me to tell the
doctor. He could give you something. Are you having bad dreams?”
“Kind of, that and the damn nurses
come in and take your vitals every hour on the hour! So I up most of the time.”
She explained.
Jon asked “What kind of dreams are
you having? About Potter?”
Mary just looked at him and said “Jon
it’s a lot of things that’s all..I just don’t like being in hospital that’s
all.”
Cecilia just shook her head at Jon and
he just shrugged his. She looked at her daughter and said “Well why don’t I go
talk to the nurse and have her get me the doctor so I can have him get you
something for sleep, OK?” Mary just shook her head yes, Cecilia knew something
was up but didn’t want to ask her while Jon was there.
After her mother left, Jon turned to
Mary and asked “Well do you want to talk now or later?” he asked annoyed.
“Can we talk later? I’m really not feeling all
that well now.” She said not wanting to get into anything right now knowing he
was getting irritated.
“Do you want me to get the doctor or
your mother?” he asked concerned.
“No, no. I think I just need to get
some sleep. Do you mine?” she asked him looking rather tired now.
“No baby. Do you want me to leave?”
he asked concerned.
“If you don’t mind. I don’t think I
could try and get some sleep with you here.” She didn’t want to hurt his
feelings but she just needed some time alone right now to think.
“Yeah, alright. I’ll come by later.
Alright?” he asked her a little hopeful.
“That would be fine.” She said. He
lean down and kissed her on her forehead and reluctantly left.
As he left he met her mother in the
hall way. “Mrs. Simon.”
“Jon is everything alright? I noticed that is
was very tense between the two of you.”
“Yeah, well I don’t think your
daughter feels the same way about me that I thought she did.”
“What makes you think that dear?” she
asked him.
“She wants to have a talk with me. I
think she’s having seconds thought about us.” He said a little sadly.
“Come with me. I think you and I need to have
a little talk” she said and took his hand.
They entered the cafeteria and both
got coffee. “So, she’s having second’s thoughts?” she asked.
“I believe so.” He said sadly.
“But she hasn’t come right out and said that.
Has she?” Cecilia asked.
“No.” he said unsurely.
“Ok then. So how do you know she’s
having second thoughts?”
“Well one: by the way she’s acting and two:
she wants to have the talk.” Jon said unsure of what to do.
Cecilia was trying very hard not to show how
amused she was. She knew how her daughter could be. “Jon, do you like her?”
“Yes ma’am.” And as he said this he was trying
very hard to look over her head and not in her eyes for he didn’t want her to
see how upset he was.
“Do you love her?” she asked even thou she
knew the answer.
Finally he looked at her and she
could tell by just looking in his eyes but wanted to hear him say it. Very
confidently he looked at her and said “Yes Mrs. Simon, I do love your daughter.
And it has nothing to do with her getting hurt. I think I fell for her right
after we started working together. She just had this… I don’t know how to
explain it.” He said as he shook his head.
“Jon you don’t have to explain it to
me. I’ve known how the two of you felt for each other the second I met you then
when I saw my daughter look at you. You can’t fool a mother believe me.”
“Then you’re all right with this?” he
asked kind of surprised.
“Well of course I am. Why wouldn’t I
be. My daughter is in love and happy. So that makes me happy.” Cecilia told
him.
“Well I don’t think she’s that happy with
me right now.” Jon said as he bowed his head and stared into his coffee.
“Why” she said.
“She made up some excuse about not
feeling well and wanted to get some sleep and asked me to leave. Said she
couldn’t sleep with me being there.” He put his head down shaking.
“Yeah that was an excuse.” She told
him. Jon looked up surprised. “I’m going
to tell you a little secret but if you tell her I said this I’ll deny it. She’s
scared sweetheart. Her last boyfriend, well didn’t end well.”
“It didn’t. She said her brothers
scared him off.” Jon said surprised.
“They had too. She didn’t want them
to know that he was hitting her. She thought she could handle it herself but
unfortunately she couldn’t.” She could see Jon’s eyes blaze with anger. Just
the thought of someone hitting her made his blood boil.
“So how did they find out?” he asked
gruffly.
“She couldn’t hide the black eye he
gave her. Of course she did get a good kick in herself before she fled.”
“Well good. But wouldn’t that make
him want to hit her again?” he asked her mother pissed.
“Sweetie, you can’t hit back right
away when you’re bold over clutching your privates now can you.” Cecilia said
smiling.
“OH! Well good for her.” He chuckled. “I know
she’s tough but just the thought of someone hitting her or any girl just pis um
ticks me off. Sorry Mrs. Simon.”
“It’s ok Jon I do have three children
you know.” She said as she laughed.
“So how do I get your daughter to
believe me that I really do care about her?”
“Just be honest with her. Then she’ll
be honest with you. Then her stubbornness should fade and then you should be
able to talk some sense into her.” She explained to him.
“Thank You.” He said to her and gave
her a kiss on the cheek.
